Adidas miCoach Fit Smart unveiled

Adidas officially introduces its latest wearable device. The miCoach Fit Smart was first seen during the Wearable Technologies Conference 2014 in San Francisco and is capable of measuring the wearer's calories burned, heart rate, distance covered, pace, and other fitness-related stats. The gadget features a strap made of soft silicone and a small strip of LEDs that change color depending on the workout's intensity. The miCoach Fit Smart may not be Adidas' first wearable gadget, which is becoming more crowded than ever, but the sports apparel company says its latest product has a brand-new perspective: not only it aims to appeal to die-hard runners, but also to those who like to start running and working out more consistently. "What we did, by working with elite coaches, was bring an experience to help people set weekly goals and training plans," Paul Gaudio, Adidas' general manager of digital sports told Engadget. "It is about encouraging people to get active and stay active." The Adidas miCoach Fit Smart will be available later this month for $199. Source: Engadget Read More

Patent for camera-equipped Google contact lenses filed

Google plans to take wearable device to the next level, even when its Glass has yet to become wide available in the market. The tech giant has filed a patent application to the USPTO to embed tiny cameras in contact lenses. These Google contact lenses are aimed for various uses, such as providing basic input for a contact-based assistive device for people with visual impairment. Also, as what many Google Glass haters may have thought, these contact lenses can capture images of what the wearer sees. This follows Google's previous patent application of developing "smart contact lenses" that would monitor the wearer's blood sugar levels, providing a non-invasive method of measuring it among diabetics. There is a possibility that both patents would be combined for future Google contact lenses. If the company is bent on shipping these lenses soon, Google needs to tackle the growing negative perception among wearable devices that can take images of people without their knowledge. This feature has been a cause of disdain towards wearers of Google Glass, wherein a journalist was recently attacked in San Francisco. We should note that many tech companies patent hundreds--even thousands--of patents over time, but only a fraction of which are manufactured and even a handful of them would be shipped. Report: Amazon 3D smartphone coming this Fall

Rumors about Amazon developing a smartphone have been around since 2012, evolving into speculations about the Amazon 3D smartphone last year. A report from The Wall Street Journal claims that Amazon's 3D-capable phone will be unveiled in June, with shipping expected by the end of September. Citing the usual sources who are "familiar with the details," the e-commerce company has been demonstrating its 3D smartphone to developers in San Francisco and Seattle in recent weeks. The demonstrations require developers to visit heavily-guarded hotel suites just to view the prototypes. The Amazon 3D smartphone will reported have four front-facing cameras or sensors that would track where the user is gazine. It also offers a 3D viewing experience without having to wear special glasses. While some say Amazon is going away from its e-commerce expertise by developing its own hardware, one has to look at its Kindle Fire tablet to see the reason behind the madness. A report from ad firm Chitika Insights states that since Christmas of 2013, shares of Kindle Fire grew so significantly that it has eaten away iPad's dominance, at least in North America. Amazon has yet to respond as of this writing. Source: Mashable Image source: Twin Design / Read More

Sales of Typo iPhone keyboard halted after court order

BlackBerry is earning its little victories bit by bit. Apart from recent gains in the stock market, the company won a court battle against Ryan Seacrest's phone accessory company behind the Typo iPhone keyboard. The court order temporarily halts Typo from selling its iPhone keyboard, which is eerily familiar to BlackBerry's physical keyboards (as seen in this photo), citing that Typo's product might have infringed on BlackBerry's patents. Also, U.S. District Judge William Orrick in San Francisco stated that BlackBerry will "likely to prevail" on its infrigement claims, as Typo has not made a strong challenge to the validity of BlackBerry's patents. During the hearing, Typo claims its iPhone keyboard does not harm BlackBerry at all since the Canadian smartphone company is already losing market share. The judge also rejected the defendant's pleas that the temporary sales ban may put Ryan Seacrest's company out of business as it cannot fulfill orders of the Typo iPhone keyboard. In a statement, Typo said it is disappointed about the decision and will appeal the order, adding it will "continue to make and sell innovative products that busy people can't live without." The ruling also requires BlackBerry to post a bond, the amount of which should be enough to pay damages to Typo if in case it is later found that the temporary sales ban should not have been granted. The injunction starts once BlackBerry posts bond, which could take as long as two weeks. In the meantime, Typo is offering a limited-time-only "same day shipping," so we think this is the best time to purchase the $99 Typo iPhone keyboard. Source: Engadget Read More

Project Morpheus: Sony enters virtual reality

Sony dips its feet into the virtual reality business as the electronics company unveiled Project Morpheus, a VR headset that works with PlayStation 4, during this week's Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. The announcement makes Sony the first major player to venture into virtual reality, a decades-old technology that has since become a hot topic in the video game industry after the introduction of the Oculus Rift, which has recently received $75 million in funding for a potential consumer release. Meanwhile, Microsoft has recently filed a patent that deals with the development of its own virtual reality device. "Project Morpheus is the latest example of innovation from SCE, and we're looking forward to its continued development and the games that will be created as development kits get into the hands of content creators," Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, said in a statement. The gadget sports a head-mounted display that can be linked with the PlayStation Camera, as well as a "3-D audio technology" that allows players to hear sounds from all vantage points, including audio from above or below the player's point of view. Sony adds that Project Morpheus also works with the PlayStation Move motion-based controller. Sony has demonstrated the virtual reality headset during the conference using several titles including stealth game Thief, intergalactic dogfight shooter EVE Valkyrie, and underwater-with-the-sharks simulator The Deep. Project Morpheus will be available in what Sony says a "future commercial launch," without specifiying release dates. Source: USA Today Read More
