What to Know About BlackBerry 10?

BlackBerry, the company formerly known as Research In Motion, has unveiled its new smartphones that run on BlackBerry 10 and there has been a lot of talk. Here is a rundown, as provided by the Washington Post, on what the company said about its new line of hardware and software:

There are two new phones – BlackBerry is releasing two new smartphones, namely the Q10 and the Z10. The Q10 has a full QWERTY keyboard and a 3.1-inch screen, an obvious trade-off for those who prefer typing on tactile keys. Meanwhile, the Z10 is an all-touchscreen phone and features a 4.2-inch display, 16GB of expandable storage, an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, and a 2-megapixel front-facing shooter. It also has a dual-core 1.5GHz S4 processor, as well as micro USB and micro HDMI ports.

Typing on a Z10 is easy – Even though it is an all-touch device, the BlackBerry Z10 is designed with easy typing in mind. The device comes with an innovative predictive typing system that adapts as you type, as well as suggests words on the keyboard for a speedier typing. You can also switch quickly between languages.

Its camera does not miss a moment – Both phones feature a TimeShift feature on their cameras. It lets users create the best picture possible by identifying faces and saving the shots moments before and after the photo is taken. If one subject is not smiling or another is blinking, users can edit that photo using the saved shots.

Long-time BlackBerry users will love BB10 – The new operating system, which was built from the ground up, is loaded with features that BlackBerry users have been seeking, such as easy multitasking, better multimedia capabilities, and a much deeper social integration.

BB10 still targets the business person – BlackBerry does not steer away from its main target market–the business consumers. One of BB10’s highlighted features is the BlackBerry Balance, which lets users separate work and personal data–whether they are apps, emails, and other documents–into two parts of the smartphone. It spares the embarrassment of accidentally including your boss when you send your email “to all,” as well as for employers to securely clear data on employee’s phones when necessary.

Major carriers will support BB10 – AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile have announced they will carry one or both BB10 smartphones, although they have yet to put a specific date when the device will go on sale. Meanwhile, only Verizon has announced the pricing for the BlackBerry Z10, which will cost $199.99. The carrier will also exclusively offer a white version of the Z10.

There are a lot of apps – BlackBerry also re-launches its app store, now named BlackBerry World. The new store offers 70,000 apps, which is a lot but not as many as the 700,000 free and paid apps that Apple and Google boast. The BlackBerry World also has apps from big-name developers like Rovio, Skype, and Amazon. The company also made it clear for developers that they can easily port their Android apps to BB10 with a few BlackBerry-provided tools.
