Bloomberg has reported that Apple is considering to replace the Intel-made processors in Mac desktop and laptop computers with new chips based on designs it uses for its iOS-based gadgets.

Apple had reportedly planned about such changes in the past, but had to face several challenges to achieve this. For one, its engineers have to make sure that the current Mac software would work on new processors. They already experienced that struggle when Apple left PowerPC as its chipset manufacturer and opted for Intel, leaving a lot of legacy software incompatible and led to several transition issues.

By the looks of it, Apple seems to be confident in their own processors and dropping Intel would be a likely scenario. However, this event will not happen overnight. It is speculated that a major OS update would be released first, paving the way for new architecture to work when future Apple-chipped Macs would be released.
