Kobo Unveils New E-Readers, Android Tablet

Posted on September 6, 2012

Kobo attempts to try stealing Amazon’s thunder by introducing its new e-readers and even unveiled an Android tablet a day before Amazon’s official announcement of its new hardware.

Rakuten-owned Kobo unveils its $79 Kobo Mini, which features a 5-inch E-Ink touchscreen with 2GB internal storage, WiFi connectivity, and Kobo’s social reading functions. Too bad there is no expandable memory here.

Up next is the Kobo Glo, a slightly larger device with a $129 suggested retail price. Like the Nook with GlowLight and the new Kindle Paperwhite, it is equipped with a 6-inch “ComfortLight” front-lit touch display with 1024 x 768 resolution, making it comfortable to read e-books in dark environments. The Kobo Glo also has the same WiFi radio and internal store, but this one comes with a microSD card slot.

The forever-underdog company also introduces its latest low-cost tablet, the Kobo Arc. The Ice Cream Sandwich-powered tablet provides users with recommended e-books based on their personal tastes, while its Tapestries feature allows them to “pin” content such as books from the Kobo library, Wiki pages, images, and YouTube videos.

The tablet comes packed with a 1.5GHz dual-core TI OMAP 4470 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 7-inch IPS display with 1280 x 800 resolution, and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera.

The Kobo Arc will be available in 8GB and 16GB variations for $199 and $249 respectively.
