Amazon is currently introducing new hardware in its lineup at this moment. One of the highlights of the company’s event in Los Angeles is the unveiling of the Kindle Paperwhite, which features a frontlighting screen that allows readers to enjoy their favorite e-books in the dark without disturbing the people around them. The device is set to compete with Barnes & Noble’s Nook with GlowLight.

Apart from the glowing screen, this latest e-book reader from Amazon comes with a “Paperwhite” display that offers more contrast and brightness.

While the location of the power switch and USB port remain the same as previous versions of the Kindle, the home button of the Kindle Paperwhite is located at the bottom, while its casing has gone to a much darker gray–almost black.

The display has 62% more pixels than its predecessor, is merely 9.1mm thin, has a very thin bezel, and you can adjust the level of brightness of the display with your finger.

There is also a new feature called “Time to Read,” which offers a preview of how it would take for you to reach the next chapter. The Kindle Paperwhite even has an astounding battery life: it can last for up to eight weeks, even with the light on.

The entry-level Kindle Paperwhite is available for pre-order on Amazon.com for $119. Shipping begins on October 1st. Meanwhile, the 3G-equipped Kindle Paperwhite costs $179. The device is available in over 100 countries.
