A UK High Court decision regarding Apple’s patent infringement case against Samsung ruled in favor of the Korean company, but the rationale behind it was filled with praise about Apple’s iconic iPad.

In his decision, Judge Colin Birss on Monday wrote that while some physical differences exist between the iPad and Samsung’s Galaxy Tab line of tablets, the latter is “not as cool” as Apple’s tablet.

The Galaxy Tab tablets “do not have the same understated and extreme simplicity which is possessed by the Apple design,” Judge Birss said.

Apple has sued Samsung for allegedly copying iPad and its patents for its Galaxy Tab tablets in the United States and Germany, while Samsung filed a lawsuit in the United Kingdom to have the Galaxy Tab’s design declare as non-infringing. The reason behind Samsung’s legal move is because UK courts tend to rule in favor of alleged infringers over patent holders and that a favorable decision could impact the German lawsuit. Courts in European Union member nations must have to consider rulings on similar cases in other EU countries.

As predicted, Samsung is pleased with the ruling. “Should Apple continue to make excessive legal claims in other countries based on such generic designs, innovation in the industry could be harmed and consumer choice unduly limited,” Samsung stated in its e-mailed statement.

Apple, meanwhile, insists that Samsung is a copycat. “It’s no coincidence that Samsung’s latest products look a lot like the iPhone and iPad,” Apple’s spokesperson said. “This kind of blatant copying is wrong and, as we’ve said many times before, we need to protect Apple’s intellectual property.”
