gTar: Learning How to Play Guitar with iPhone

Posted on May 28, 2012

The guitar is one of the most difficult instruments to learn, but add some bits of tech magic and an embedded iPhone and you can learn how to play it with utmost ease. Incident has introduced the gTar, a fully digital guitar that comes with an iPhone dock and a clever app that teaches the users the intricacies of the instrument.

Once the iPhone is docked in the guitar’s body and the app is loaded, the gTar’s neck is lighted with a series of interactive LEDs along the fretboard. For starters, the LEDs light up in sequence with the teaching app during Easy mode, showing the novice player which string to play. Once you have progressed to the Medium mode, the player is forced to use the frets and the string, although the gTar only plans the correct string. As the user improves, he can do away with some of the training features and allow himself to have full access to the gTar’s musical functions.

Incident has put up its gTar project on Kickstarter hoping to raise $100,000. Reception has been so positive, including after gTar’s public demonstration during the TechCrunch-organized Disrupt conference, that is was able to raise over $250,000 (more than double its goal) in less than 24 hours after the project was posted.

Interested backers can still be able to leave a pledge for some limited-edition and early bird gTars for as little as $399. This instrument is expected to sell at $449 once it comes out on retail.
