Report: BBM Will Remain BlackBerry-Exclusive

I know many people who got excited when rumors spread around about BlackBerry Messenger becoming ported to Android or iOS, but a recent report from the Wall Street Journal says that will never happen.

The broadsheet, citing sources knowledgeable about the matter, says that Research In Motion’s new CEO Thorsten Heins decided that the company should not pursue licensing deals. The decision, if confirmed, could be a letdown for many BlackBerry users wanting to jump ship, leaving them with their BBs with a dwindling BBM contact list as their friends switch to iPhone or Android.

Still, RIM claims that total BBM users continue to rise with over 55 million, up more than tenfold from 5.3 million in January 2009. The messaging service, however, continues to face tough competitors like Apple’s iMessage and third-party apps like WhatsApp Messenger.

A spokesperson for RIM says the company remains focused on, and is committed to, BBM and is “excited to bring new capabilities” to its user base. How they will do that? We don’t know for sure.
