When the Delorme inReach two-way GPS communicator was first released last year, many outdoor adventurers saw the need to have one. After all, they (and even we) do not want to end up lost or injured in a location where there is no cell phone signal or WiFi–which is pretty much 90 percent of the earth, according to the manufacturer. It received numerous prestigious awards including 2012 Backpacker Editors’ Choice, 2012 National Marine Manufacturers Association Innovation Award, 2011 Popular Science Best of What’s New, 2012 CES Innovations, and 2011 Gear of the Year from Men’s Journal and National Geographic Adventure

But alas, this device comes with the Earthmate app that was only available for Android users, leaving many iPhone-armed outdoorsmen feeling left out. Thankfully, Delorme just unveiled an iOS version of the app, enabling iPhone users who got lost while canoeing in the Amazon to send text messages or SOS beacons using the inReach unit.

The handheld gadget relies on its own GPS positioning and include locations in messages sent to friends and rescue crews, thus keeping them updated wherever your feet take you, just as long as it can get an Iridium satellite lock-in.

The Delorme inReach two-way satellite communicator costs $250, as well as a $10 monthly fee to keep you connected.

It’ll still cost you $250 for the device and $10 per month to stay linked up; even so, there’s a real chance you’ll be texting your friends from your iPhone in Mali, assuming you haven’t had to call a rescue helicopter first. The Earthmate app, meanwhile, remains free-of-charge.
