New Flashback Version Plagues Macs

Posted on April 24, 2012

Seems like the spread of Flashback malware on Mac computers introduced a new breed of Mac-specific viruses. Intego, an online security company, has reported that a new variant of Flashback called “Flashback.S” has been making the rounds. Just like its predecessor, this new malware take advantage of the Java vulnerability, something that Apple already patched.

Flashback.S needs no password to install and places itself into the user’s home folder. Once installed, the virus deletes all the files and sub-folders that involve Java caching, which removes the applet from the infected Mac to avoid detection.

Although the malware installs on its own, it will not do so if it finds antivirus programs installed such as VirusBarrier X6, Xcode, or Little Snitch.
