“Girls Around Me” Maker Defends Creepy App

After its app was tagged as the “creepiest” in the world, O.O.O SMS Servicies (yes, that is how it is spelled) defended its “creepy” creation, claiming it was designed to make “geo-social exploration of popular venues” easier and more visual.

In its statement, the Saint Petersburg, Russia-based company said: “We follow the geo-social trend for mobile devices that is supported by numerous location sharing services, networks and apps.” It also pointed out that it was “impossible” for its users to search for a particular person in the app or track their movements.

The company added that the app had been downloaded more than 70,000 times since its debut “several months” ago. It claimed user reactions were generally positive, saying that Girls Around Me helped them to discover “hot spots,” or venues that are popular among girls or boys.

O.O.O SMS Servicies insisted it has not violated any API rules, adding that it was clearly stated in its privacy policy that Girls Around Me app cannot display information other than what was already displayed on Foursquare and Facebook.
