Motorola Wants Share of iPhone and iPad Sales

Posted on February 7, 2012

It has been revealed to the media that Motorola Mobility asked Apple to acquire 2.25% of sales from some iPhones and iPads last year, which could represent billions of dollars worth of licensing fees. The request, which was filed in a California court last month, shows that Motorola (with its impending acquisition by Google) demanded the royalty for license of its patents it claims Apple has infringed.

Expert estimates guess that a royalty of Apple’s iPhone sales would amount to over $1 billion in 2011. The court letter, however, does not specify which devices would be included in the deal nor whether it would be retroactive.

We all know by now how patents have been a big deal among tech companies, with each company accusing others of infringement. Analysts say that Motorola is most likely asking for an amount so huge that Apple would refuse, which would prompt The M to sue the iCompany for various injunctions or force a settlement.

Both Apple and Motorola decline to comment.
