Apple winds itself into another legal trouble, this time over the term “iPad.” Proview Electronics, a Taiwanese display manufacturer, claims Apple has no right to use the name “iPad” into China. Apple has already bought the trademark from Proview in 2006, but apparently the deal is not loophole-proof.

Proview’s unit in Shenzhen, China, claims it owns the rights to use “iPad” in China. The company has sued Apple last December for $1.6 billion and the Chinese court ruled in Proview’s favor. Apple is appealing the decision.

The Chinese company also claims a court in Xicheng district in Beijing had planned to impose Apple a 240-million yuan ($38 million) fine, but Apple objected. A representative of the court, however, informs The Global Times it has never announced any such fine.

Reps from Apple remain mum as of this posting.
