Report: Microsoft to Add Kinect Sensors to Laptops

Posted on January 28, 2012
Category:

The Daily posts a preview that Microsoft is testing its Kinect system on various prototype Windows 8 laptops. Kinect’s cameras will be placed above the laptop’s screen, where a small webcam is usually located, while rows of LED will line up at the bottom part of the screen.

Apart from being tempted to play Dance Central 2 in front of a laptop, adding Kinect sensors into laptops can also be used to navigate through Windows 8’s Metro UI, just like how Xbox users browse the console’s Metro-like interface. It may also be a new way the persons with disabilities to use a computer.

If this pushes through, Microsoft would be licensing its Kinect technology to hardware manufacturers, who in turn implement it into their laptop designs. This is a positive news for Microsoft, who continues to look for ways to expand its Kinect technology beyond the gaming realm.
