Evi May Give Siri Some Competition

Posted on January 24, 2012

As much as many iPhone 4S users are excited about using the Siri voice-activated virtual assistant, but so far we hear numerous complaints on how Siri does not understand certain accents, how it does not work outside the United States, or how it refuses to help you with most tasks.

Thankfully, there is another app that may give Siri a run for its money if it continues to be stubborn. Evi by True Knowledge has just been released as an iPhone app and in beta mode on Android. This app not only works more efficient than Siri, according to early reviews, but can also be used by international users.

Evi is based on a patented technology on language and knowledge understanding, licensed voice recognition software from Nuance, and True Knowledge’s own engine.

Users can ask Evi on tens of thousands of topics and has a stored knowledge of almost a billion facts. For instance, you can ask “her” on who was the president of the United States when Texas became the 28th state or for a recipe for sugar-free apple pie. On both occassions, Siri would most likely refuse. Evi, meanwhile, will provide answers as well as a list of weblinks.

Evi makes use of a lot of sources, including Yelp for local-based searches, mobile-friendly websites, APIs, and search engine results among others.

However, there are tasks that Evi cannot do, such as adding things to the iPhone Calendar or into reminders. But Evi will get there in an update or two.

Evi is now available on iTunes for just $0.99 (to cover the license) and Android Market for free (since it’s in beta).

Hope that Evi will perform better than Siri and use less data usage compared to Siri.
