Nissan develops an iPhone case, no joke. Being a car manufacturer that it is, expect Nissan to come up with an unusual product that is beyond ordinary. The Nissan Scratch Shield iPhone Case is being touted as the world’s first “self-healing” iPhone cover. It quickly fixes minor scratches on its own, without the aid of scratch-removing chemicals.

The company uses Scratch Shield, its self-healing paint technology originally developed for its vehicles since 2005. The case, meanwhile, is made of lightweight ABS plastic and is a product of a collaboration with University of Tokyo and Advanced Softmaterials.

“The outer ‘paint’ is made of polyrotaxane, which means that when damage occurs to the coating in the form of a fine scratch, the chemical structure is able to react to change back to its original shape and fill the gap — ‘healing’ the blemish,” Nissan states in its press release.

Protoypes of Nissan’s iPhone case has been distributed to a number of journalists and select customers. The company plans on putting the Scratch Shield iPhone Case to commercial retail later this year.
