Sales of Nokia Lumia 800 Dismal

Nokia’s first Windows Phone-powered handset–the Lumia 800–may have impressive specs, but it seems the consumers are not buying.

A recent survey by Exane BNP Paribas shows that the Nokia Lumia 800 has garnered little interest from European consumers, with only two percent of the smartphone-savvy respondents saying they would pick it.

Analysts has said there is little to pick on the Lumia 800, especially its software glitch that eats much of the battery life. Nevertheless, consumers remain unimpressed. While Android is the OS of choice for smartphone users in Europe at about 50 percent and Apple at between 15 and 20 percent, smartphones using Windows Phone software have just 2 percent market share.

The dismal sales of the Lumia 800 has ripple throughout Nokia in a bad way as its shares fall over 20 percent since October 26, when the smartphone was launched.

And the bigger irony is that Nokia phones that run on Symbian software, which it decided to junk in favor of Windows Phone, remain available in retail and even outsell Nokia’s Windows phones 10 to 1.

“There isn’t much room left for a third ecosystem. The smartphone market is consolidating fast,” said Bernstein analyst Pierre Ferragu.

Despite the disappointing news, Nokia officials remain positive about the prospects of Lumia. A spokesman has said there was “positive momentum” over its smartphone, but declines to provide any data. Another executive has argued that Nokia never relied on the first Lumia phones to bring a quick runaround to the struggling phone company, but has expected it to be its “first step towards recovery.”
