Best Smartphones of 2011

We hare blogged a lot of smartphones this year, but only a few stand out as worthy to receive the accolades (and more buyers). The tech blogging community has come up with the top five smartphones of 2011 and here they are in no particular order.

HTC Rezound – The most recommended Verizon smartphone of 2011, HTC Rezound has a 4.3-inch HD display with 720p resolution, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, an 8-megapixel rear camera with dual-LED flash, a 2-megapixel front camera, and Verizon 4G/ LTE speeds. Being an HTC smartphone, it also has Beats Audio algorithm in its specs and even comes with a pair of Beats earbuds for a more enhanced audio experience. It may be a bit bulky, but its rich multimedia features cannot be denied.

Samsung Focus S – Reviews have called it the best Windows Phone, with its 8-megapixel camera, 1.3-megapixel video chat camera, a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen, and HSPA+ speeds courtesy of AT&T. Impressive hardware as you can see, but be careful in handling it. Nevertheless, Samsung Focus S is arguably the best smartphone with the Windows Phone OS.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus – The first smartphone to debut with Android Ice Cream Sandwich, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is praised for its sharp design and excellent internal performance. It is a big step for Android handsets, but it has a lot of room for improvement in future versions, such as the static in phone calls and the absence of an external memory card slot.

Motorola Brute i686 – It may not be a smartphone, but this handset offered by Sprint Nextel is noteworthy for its durability that other smartphones on the list seem to lack. It can tolerate being dunked into water or dropped to the floor and still receive high-quality phone calls. The Motorola Brute i686 comes with a push-to-talk function, GPS, and a 2-megapixel camera.

Apple iPhone 4S – It may not have the most impressive of specs, but the latest iPhone from Apple is a top-caliber smartphone nonetheless. The iPhone 4S has a faster processor, an upgraded camera, iOS 5, and a very useful voice-powered assistant. These upsides overpower the downsides of this device, including the lack of 4G, a short battery life, and a smaller screen compared to its contemporaries.
