HP: webOS Now Open Source

In a letter to her employees, HP CEO Meg Whitman has announced that the company will make webOS available as open source. This means that their operating system’s underlying codes can be used and exploited by other companies without any asking fees.

According to Whitman, giving webOS an open-source license “is the best way to ensure the benefits of webOS are accessible to the largest possible ecosystem.” A separate company press release adds that HP will help accelerate the open development of webOS and will become an “active participant and investor” in this new endeavor.

The announcement receives a welcoming response to webOS fans. HP may not have succeeded in its webOS efforts, as evident to its $3 billion loss this year (even to the point that it gave away its webOS-based TouchPad tablet for a mere $99), but at least other companies may be able to pick up what HP has left off.
