A group of scientists in University of Washington in Seattle introduces a new type of contact lenses that can project images in front of the eyes. Wearers would be able to read floating texts and e-mails, as well as augment their sense of sight with computer-generated images.

This Terminator-style technology has undergone trials on rabbits, which so far show the lenses are safe and feasible. There are, however, some issues to be resolved such as finding an effective power source. So far, the prototype device runs within centimeters of the wireless battery.

The researchers hope that future versions of these flexible lenses could embed hundreds more pixels and produce complex holographic images. They also predict practical usage of these advanced lenses, such as providing drivers journey directions or vehicle speed right within their immediate eye sight. The lenses also have potential usage in virtual video gaming and medicine.
