Sony to Launch New Television Platform

Sony’s business performance has been rough in recent years, highlighted with an expected loss worth of billions of dollars in the fiscal year ending in March 2012. The company’s biggest struggle is with its TV category, a market where people choose smaller sets and cheaper brands especially in this poor economy. Despite of all these, Sony remains optimistic.

In an interview with Wall Street Journal, Sony CEO Howard Stringer believes that his company will be able to overcome these trying times. “The trick is to weather them, learn from them, act graciously through them, and learn why and when you have to change.”

And change is what Sony is planning to do with attempt to compete with Apple’s so-called “reinvention of TV.” While it is said that Apple is developing a “breakthrough device,” Sony is gunning for a four-screen strategy that connects TV, PC, smartphone, and tablet in one platform. According to Stringer, the company has spent the last five years building a platform that would compete against Steve Jobs.

Whether Sony would be able to make its new TV platform a success like what it did to its previous inventions like the Walkman is yet to be seen.
