Nook Tablet Out to Out-Spec Kindle Fire

Barnes and Noble has formally unveiled the Nook Tablet, its attempt to compete with the much-anticipated Kindle Fire. B&N CEO Willian Lynch emphasized that their Nook Tablet has superior features over the Amazon competition, such as its fully-laminated display, twice the amount of RAM, and in-store support.

The 7-inch Nook Tablet looks similarly to its cousin Nook Color, only thinner and lighter. It features a Texas Instruments dual-core 1GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storate (expandable to 32GB via microSD slot),and Nook cloud support. It lasts for up to 11 hours on a single charge and has an interesting “Read & Record” feature, which lets parents record children’s stories so their kids can play in case they are away.

Another advantage of Nook Tablet over the Kindle Fire would be the amount of available content. Barnes and Noble has over 2.5 million books in its virtual library, as well as thousands of apps, and access to Hulu Plus and Netflix. If you prefer watching TV episodes and movies through a small tablet screen, you would be pleased to know that Nook Tablet supports 1080p HD video playback (up to 720p if content is from Netflix).

The Nook Tablet will be available beginning next week for $249. If you find it too hefty, you can choose from other Nook models that have undergone some price slashing, such as the $199 Nook Color and the Nook Simple Touch for a mere $99.
