Steve Jobs: 1955-2011

Posted on October 6, 2011

Apple’s Board of Directors has released a statement that the company’s co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs has passed away. He was 56.

“Steve’s brilliance, passion, and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives,” the official statement said. “The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.”

Jobs, the man behind innovations in computer and mobile technology, had a long-fought battle with pancreatic cancer. He recently stepped down as CEO of Apple, recommending the company COO Tim Cook to take his place. Cook delivered his first keynote address as CEO yesterday as he unveiled the new iPhone 4S.

In an e-mail to Apple employees, Cook wrote: “Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.”

“We will honor his memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the work he loved so much,” Cook ended.

Apple’s website, which yesterday was dedicated to the new iPhone, is now focused to Jobs, using a photo of him (pictured) that will also appear on the cover of his upcoming biography due out in November. The site is asking mourners to shared their “thoughts, memories, and condolences” through this email address: rememberingsteve@apple.com
