Sphero Ball Moves By Smartphone Apps

Posted on September 15, 2011

A new toy has been earning the oohs and aahs not of children, but of grown men and women. Sphero is a small plastic ball with LEDs inside and it can be controlled using several smartphone apps. The plastic orb moves by either the phone’s touch screen or its accelerometer, making even a mere flick of the phone a command for the Sphero. This ball is as big as a fist, like any standard toy ball, and its makers would rather call it a “real-world Wii” rather than a simple child’s plaything.

So far, the Sphero can be controlled in three apps. The first app enables users to “drive” their Spheros in real-time, the second one lets them draw paths with their fingers, and finally a “golf” app that can move the ball by controlling the smartphone like a golf club. The apps feature simple, user-friendly interface and allows users to change the ball’s color according to their liking. Sphero’s manufacturer plans on launching three more apps with this toy’s release, with more coming soon.

The Sphero will be available on retail before the end of the year for only $129 each. It runs on both iOS and Android.
