This Bike Makes Thieves Pay for Their Crimes

Posted on September 13, 2011

Designer Andrew Leinonen created a bicycle that has a special feature to prevent bike theft. This invention, which he calls “StayLocked Bike,” has a lock that is integrated into the bike’s frame, which makes the bicycle break apart if a thief tries to steal it.

How this security feature works is simple. Bikers traditionally use external locks to secure their bicycles, which thieves can easily saw without damaging the bike. The StayLocked Bike has a lock that is integrated into the seat stays, which is an integral portion of the frame as it connects the rear forks to the main tube that holds the seat.

The thief would have to cut the seat stays to pilfer the bike. But as soon as he hops onto the bike, it would break apart and he would crash to the ground. Serves the thief right.
