Samsung CEO: Buying webOS? Never!

To the dismay of a handful of webOS fans, Samsung CEO Choi Gee Sung has brushed off rumors that his company is buying HP’s struggling webOS business. In response to the speculations, Choi states, “It’s not right that acquiring an operating system is becoming a fashion.” He also adds that Samsung will “never” pursue a deal like that.

This comes after several analyst reports indicate that several prominent companies are interested in picking up the critically-acclaimed-but-never-appreciated OS. However, HP only cuts off its creation of webOS-based hardware, but not the software itself, at least for now. There are also reports that HP might give its PC business a spin, which could bring back to life the TouchPad as well as other webOS hardware devices. Meanwhile, Samsung is determined in building its Bada OS, as evident with its recent unveiling of three Bada handsets, one of which features NFC capability.

So, who’s left to potentially buy the webOS? HTC is dedicated to Android, RIM is developing its next-gen BlackBerry smartphones using QNX, Motorola will soon be owned by Google, and we know about the Nokia-Microsoft deal. The answer could be the most unlikeliest of all.
