Nokia to Launch Discount Coupon Service?

Posted on July 11, 2011

Apart from creating a smartphone that runs on Windows Phone 7, Nokia has another trick up its sleeve. But while the “upcoming” Windows Phone has since been allowed to leak in the tech blogosphere, Nokia seems to be trying its best to keep this recently-leaked secret a secret as videos about it continue to be taken down.

The secret I am writing about has almost nothing to do with a new Nokia handset or a new mobile OS; it seems that Nokia tries to venture to the competitive field of discount coupons. You’ve heard it right: Nokia is about to take on the likes of LivingSocial, Google Offers, and the king of them all, Groupon.

The service is called “Nokia Perks,” wherein users simply browse for deals and coupons on its website (http://perks.nokia.com, which is currently offline) before saving on any discount and offer that they like. The coupons, in the form of barcodes, are automatically sent to your phone that you need to present to the register. As an added bonus, Nokia Perks also displays directions to the store through a mapping app.

This free coupon service was first leaked when a blogger spotted a video on Vimeo about Nokia Perks. It has since been removed and has since been reuploaded on YouTube, which was again taken down by Nokia. Looks like Nokia wants to keep Nokia Perks hush-hush for now.
