Spotify Coming to America

Posted on July 7, 2011

The music streaming service that has taken over Europe by storm is about to take that big jump over the Atlantic pond to win over the hearts of Americans. Spotify has just announced that its service will be available in the United States in a couple of months (or weeks, even days, they would not tell).

“We’re working hard to launch the service in the US as soon as possible,” director of product development Michelle Kadir stated in her Twitter account.

Sweden-based Spotify claims to have 10 million registered users who swear by the service’s easy-to-use interface, which allows users sample millions of songs from their mobile devices or on their computers. This ad-supported service is also arguably popular because of its generous free offerings, allowing users to listen to music for free, although with certain limitations. It is not yet known whether these limits would be applied in the U.S.

According to Engadget, a few kinks are being ironed out before Spotify would undergo testing stage in the Land of the Free. Such kinks may include closing deals with various record companies, but judging from its announcement it looks like this is close to be done. The big question now is: Will Warner Music Group, a company that has long defied and denied the importance of promoting music through social media, join in?
