A Look Into the Man Behind Lytro

The introduction of the Lytro camera has been hailed as “the next big thing in cameras” and the tech community could not help but gush over Silicon Valley’s newest golden boy.

Thirty-one-year-old Ren Ng (pictured), Lytro’s founder and CEO, has garnered over $50 million worth of investments as his company is geared on developing its own camera hardware that applies a breakthrough technology that allows a picture’s focus to be adjusted after it is taken. Ng first presented the concept in 2006 in his Ph.D. thesis at Stanford University, which eventually won the worldwide competition for the best doctoral dissertation in computer science that year.

The Lytro camera captures more light data, from many angles, compared to a conventional camera. The device uses a special sensor called a microlens array, which fits several lenses in a small space. The Lytro technology would be a big help for photographers, whether amateur or professional.

“They become interactive, living pictures,” Ng said in an interview. He even thinks his cameras, which we have yet to hear when these will be released, would be popular to families and friends who would roam through different perspectives on pictures of vacations and parties.

Lytro is currently adding its employees in their Mountain View, California, office. Its recruits include long-time employees of Microsoft, Google, Apple, Intel, and Sun Microsystems. The company will also design and market their own cameras, instead of licensing the technology to camera company giants like Canon or Nikon. The cameras will be manufactured in a company in Taiwan, but wanted to control the details of the camera itself.

Lytro insists that its cameras will be for the consumer market, suggesting a price of a few hundred dollars and will initially be sold through online retailers.
