Eye-Fi Mobile X2 Unveiled

Eye-Fi has officially launched the Mobile X2 SD memory card, which features the “Direct Mode” that lets the card connect directly to an Android or iOS mobile device by making its own WiFi network. This means that even if you are out in a WiFi-less area, the card and your smartphone or tablet can communicate.

The Direct Mode lets users instantly see their shots from the camera to the tablet’s larger screen. And if the device has 3G connectivity, the images can be automatically sent to an online gallery.

This new mode will also be provided to existing Eye-Fi X2 cards through a firmware update available around next week, although the accompanying iOS and Android apps would appear later.

The 8GB Eye-Fi Mobile X2 card with Direct Mode with be available beginning April 17 for US$79.99.
