Eye-Fi, known for its memory cards that transmits images from the camera direct to the computer via WiFi, announced that it is upping the ante with a software upgrade. Not only users will be able to send the images to the computer wirelessly, but also to mobile devices such as smartphones, tablet computers, and PMPs among others.

Now, it becomes even more convenient to stores photos. Simply carry your smartphone (or tablet) with you as you take photos and the images would be transmitted right into your mobile device. Eye-Fi calls it “Direct Mode,” enabling users to edit photos more conveniently and quickly. No need to worry about having an adapt to plug your card into or lament on the iPad for not having an adapter for that particular type of memory card.

If you already own an Eye-Fi X2, then you are in luck because Direct Mode comes as a free upgrade later this year. If you don’t have it yet, you can buy one with prices starting at US$49.99.
