With the Nintendo 3DS coming next year, a lot of new game titles will also pop up to exploit the joys of 3D gaming. One of these games is a 3D shooter called “Kid Icarus: Uprising,” which is being developed by Project Sora (a team-up between Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of Super Smash Bros., and Nintendo owner Satoru Iwata). It is the first Kid Icarus installment since 1991.

The premise of the game is about the protagonist, Pit, battling the forces of Medusa while utilizing the power of flight given to him by Palutena, the Goddess of Light. However, Pit has only 5 minutes to use this power, after which he could only battle on land.

In his regular Famitsu column, Sakurai was asked by Iwata in early 2008 what kind of game he would develop for a device that eventually became the Nintendo 3DS. He made a bold decision by going for a shooter genre, which does not sell much in Japan compared overseas, as well as something he finds difficult to develop.

The game was also originally designed as an original series, but changed his mind to revive a long-dormant title after a brief discussion with Iwata.

The game’s trailer, which was introduced in E3, was so well-received and we expect it to be the same once the game is released.
