The Death of Google Gears

Google Gears

Google engineers have decided the Google Gears has seen better days as the company attempts to push the Web envelope further with HTML 5.0.

"We are not driving forward in any meaningful way," said Linus Upson, the engineering director of Google.  "We are continuing to maintain it, so that applications will continue to work; we don’t want to break anything out there."  Originally launched in 2007, Google Gears was a plugin used to allow Web-based Google applications to work offline.

So how does HTML 5.0 work?  This platform is capable of caching apps and databases, as well as applies canvas, videos, and even geolocation tags.

It looks like our Internet is in for a lot of change these coming months.
